Jutka, now released from the concentration camp, and the illegal communist Laci get to know each other after the war at party headquarters. Their relationship spans decades and political turning points, their paths separate and then entwine again. Sometimes they work for the same goal, sometimes they find themselves on opposing sides; they constantly have to reevaluate their political roles and relations. Through their parallel story, János Herskó subtly paints a picture of a violent period of 20th century Hungarian history and he is not afraid to take on the taboos of the Holocaust or 1956.

Supporting film: The Story of N.
Hungarian animation, colour, 1978, dir: Péter Szoboszlay, No dialogue, 8’
