Ex Machina is an intense psychological thriller played out in a love triangle, exploring big ideas about the nature of consciousness, emotion, sexuality, truth and lies. Caleb Smith, a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company's brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman. Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to take part in a strange and fascinating experiment in which he must interact with the world's first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl. Caleb becomes the human component in a Turing Test evaluating the capabilities of Ava, whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated — and more deceptive — than the two men could have imagined.

Alex Garland, writer of The Beach, 28 Days Later and Sunshine, makes his directorial debut with this chilling vision of the not-too-distant future of artificial intelligence.
