Choose life. Right from the opening line and first scene we know: this is an unorthodox, revolutionary from the point of view of form and content, indeed, literally revolutionary film. On the one hand, because of the way it handles time: it is as though the whole thing is playing in the present continuous, everything happens in front of the viewer, it brings the viewer into a world that one could only inhabit as a junkie. On the other hand, it does not judge, it does not preach about drugs, it does not pretend to show the way out of this downward spiral. It just depicts. Sometimes humorously, sometimes blending elements of horror into the scenes, sometimes stomach-churningly. It is the movie that has so many memorable scenes it repays a second viewing, and a third…
