Elizabeth Lane is the perfect American housewife: she lives on a farm with her husband and child, and writes a cookery column for a magazine. Or at least this is the image she portrays to her hundreds of thousands of readers, while in truth she pens her material in a cramped New York apartment. However, “America’s best cook” gets into a tangle when the publisher arranges for her to fulfil the wishes of a returning war hero to spend Christmas with her and the family. The real, Hungarian master chef, the brilliant character actor S. Z. Sakall, that is, Szőke Szakáll (blonde beard) plays in this heart-warming comedy; he occasionally spices up his jovial uncle character with Hungarian phrases and transforms Irish stew into true goulash in seconds.
