Without doubt, there was not a single genre in which our own Mihály Kertész couldn’t produce a great, or at least a successful, work. This large-scale, swaggering sea-based adventure film was the tenth collaboration between the great star of the age, Errol Flynn (who is cinema’s Robin Hood non plus ultra) and Kertész. The declared intention of this movie set in Elizabethan England was to change the American public’s perception of the war, which is why anyone recognizing the figure of Hitler in the character of King Philip who controls the Armada is not mistaken. A colourized version of the film proved hugely popular in the 1980s. For many, this war allegory was ‘the’ adventure film of all time.
