1932. Youthful and attractive Lissy, daughter of a social democratic worker, wants to break out of the desolate world of Berlin tenements. Handsome office employee Alfred Fromeyer promises her a secure life. However, Alfred is laid off during the depression; at a loss as to what to do the man is seduced by propaganda and the promise of power into joining the ascendant Nazi movement. Paul, Lissy’s brother, who for a time was close to the communists, similarly signs up and wears the uniform of the SA. But when he falls under the shadow of suspicion due to his antipathy towards capitalists, he is gunned down by his own party comrades. This finally opens Lissy’s eyes to the realization that she cannot continue to be the wife of Fromeyer.
