Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans – the subtitle not only conveys the visuality and musicality of Murnau’s masterpiece but also that moment in film history when these two elements came into closer proximity. Fox Studio invited leading figure of German Expressionism F. W. Murnau to Hollywood, where he directed one of the finest works of silent motion pictures, although by the time he was ready cinema had already moved into a new era with the debut of the first talkies. Thus Sunrise became a kind of culmination of the silent film period and at the same time a memorial to a dying art form. The movie and producer, William Fox, carried off the prize for best film from the first-ever Oscar gala ceremony.
