From the 1950s, Rossellini was instrumental in remaking cinema through Italian neorealism, yet at the same time he profoundly rejected the direction in which European film subsequently moved. This professional crisis combined with troubles in his personal life led him to India where he began shooting at the invitation of prime minister Nehru. This dramatic story starts here, beginning with his relationship with Ingrid Bergman, through confrontation with modern culture all the way to the Cannes scandal of 1977 – all structured around archive footage, interviews and diary entries, bringing us into intimate proximity to the legendary family.
