In 1943, Greek Jews await deportation in a small Bulgarian town occupied by German troops. One of the prisoners, Ruth, approaches a German junior officer pleading for assistance for a pregnant woman. The apolitical Walter who trained as a painter tries to help and in the meantime he falls in love with Ruth. A fragile relationship blossoms between them behind the barbed wire. The man begins to rethink his own part in all this and chooses acceptance of responsibility over blindly obeying orders. He does everything he can to save Ruth from being deported. This was one of the first films to confront the Germans with their responsibility for the Holocaust. It won the jury special prize at Cannes and brought international fame for its director.
