Taghi is both a postman and the local landowner’s jack-of-all-trades, a well-intentioned but slightly nervous, eccentric figure who, among other things, is obsessed with numbers. He is a mocked figure of fun and the constant butt of jokes in this tiny community in the middle of nowhere, moreover he has an attractive wife who he is unable to satisfy. Things only get worse when his nephew returns from working in Europe with the seemingly brilliant idea of turning the local dairy farm into a modern piggery. Dariush Mehrjui’s satire contains superb acting and plotting and is a gem of Iran’s new wave cinema, inspired by Georg Büchner’s play Woyzek.
