The Korda Universe

Introduction: Mariann Sipőcz, collection supervisor, National Film Institute - Film Archive

This finely made film shot in original locations is a faithful adaptation of the romantic novel by Mór Jókai. Of the three film versions of the novel, this is the earliest. Long thought to have been lost, it is one of the pinnacles of Hungarian silent filmmaking, made under extreme circumstances in the final year of World War One. The marvellous tones were produced using the ‘virage’ (tinting) technique. The director, Sándor Korda, later quit the country and won fame and fortune in international filmmaking as Alexander Korda.
