Spanish Film Week 2024: Jokes and Cigarettes

Barcelona, 1967. Eugenio Jofra is a young jeweller about to get married. One day, on a regular bus, he meets Conchita. Her unexpected crush will make him follow her to a bar where he hears her singing. There will be no way back: the couple begins the love story of their lives.

Knowing absolutely nothing about music, Eugenio strives to learn to play the guitar to accompany Conchita. But above all, he has to fight against the fear of exposing himself to the public. This is how the “Els dos” musical career begins.

One day Conchita receives a call from her sick mother. Eugenio is left in charge of the children and, even though he wants to stop the performances already booked in small clubs, Conchita convinces him to carry on alone, since he is the family's only source of income. Conchita is away for a couple of weeks but, upon returning to Barcelona, she discovers that Eugenio has become a celebrity in the city's underground humour.

We witness the creation of this famous Spanish-speaking comedian, the selection of his aesthetics, the sunglasses, the black shirt..., the set-up formed by a stool, a high table, the cigarettes and the tube glass. Little by little an unexpected success begins in a depressed Spain that desperately seeks to laugh with that unique comedian who begins all his jokes with “Saben aquel que diu…”
