Budapest Classic Film Marathon: The Swimming Pool

La Piscine
Italian drama, colour, 122 min, 1969
in French, with Hungarian subtitles

Show times:

Director: Jacques Deray

Screenplay by Jean-Emmanuel Conil
Director of photography: Jean-Jacques Tarbes
Music by Michel Legrand
Cast: Alain Delon, Romy Schneider, Maurice Ronet, Jane Birkin

Budapest, Vienna, Hollywood / Stars, Shine!

The Swimming Pool would have been a memorable film even if every scene featuring Alain Delon and Romy Schneider did not echo the tribulations of their own lives and love affair, even if the ultimate futility of their relationship was not evident for all to see. Marianne (Romy Schneider) appearing in a two-piece black swimsuit is as attractive in the early scenes as anyone in film history. The couple’s idyllic existence is upended by the appearance of an unexpected guest. Harry, Marianne’s former lover, turns up with his daughter, played by none other than Jane Birkin. There is no doubt that this film is the wellspring of all later erotic thrillers; it stars Romy Schneider, who died 40 years ago, giving one of her best performances
