Ernő Fisch was born into a Hungarian Jewish family in 1903, in Máramarossziget (today, Sighetu Marmației in Romania) – a part of the world scorched by the events of the 20th century on more than one occasion. He was Hungarian when in 1920 Transylvania was annexed, and he was Jewish when, in 1940, it was re-annexed. As he himself puts it: sentenced to death. He survived the Holocaust by hiding in the forest. The world he had known was turned upside down in just a few decades and he was left to rely solely on his own strength. He related the story of his life to the camera of Judit Elek in 1998.
