István Szabó’s work is a sweeping vision of the 20th century told through the story of a Hungarian Jewish family. In this film, too, the director depicts history from the aspect of the individual i.e. members of the Sonnenschein family. The grandfather Ignác, magistrate in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, tries to accommodate by fitting in. The fate of the son, Ádám, is closely tied to the darkest years of the fascist regime, and that of the grandson, Iván, to that of the communists. By the end of the century, Iván has found a way back to the family traditions.

Supporting film: Sisyphus (6)
Hungarian animation, bw, 1973, dir: Marcell Jankovics, No dialogue, 3'
