Introduction: Bogdan Movileanu, Chief Curator, Cinemateca Romana

The everyday life of a jovial uranium engineer is turned upside down by death threats that arrive in crumpled yellow envelopes, mysterious phone calls and cassette tapes containing ghostly messages. As the situation gets increasingly frightening, he is forced to approach the authorities for help. The complex story is an adaptation of a work by popular crime writer Haralamb Zincă, known as the ‘Romanian John Le Carré’. It is a paranoia thriller from Ceaușescu’s Romania in which not even the horror elements evoking shades of David Lynch motifs can outdo the oppressive reality of socialism. The debut film of veteran director Nicolae Margineanu.
