The story of the music film adapted from the utopian novel of the same title by Pierre Louÿs and released in several language versions is set on an imaginary island in the realm of King Pausole. He has 366 wives, one for each day of the year plus one for leap years. When a pilot accidentally lands on the island, and the king’s daughter falls in love with him, the seeming idyll is sundered and the women rise up… Papers printed rave reviews of what was the most expensive film at the time, emphasizing the dazzling costumes and sets, which were designed by Marcell Vértes for the French Riviera. Maté Rudolph, similarly a son of Hungary, was cinematographer.
