In scene one, Thelma is wearing a white dress as though taking her first communion. As she begins to shed the shackling burdens of social expectation and femininity, so her external appearance, including her clothing, begins to change. When Ridley Scott shot what was to become one of his best movies, using the part-biographical screenplay of Callie Khouri, the situation of women was very different to that of today. Thelma and Louise contributed to women thinking differently about themselves and that we all should think differently about women’s roles in cinema, female sexuality and freedom. Because in the final analysis, this masterpiece is about freedom and liberation of the soul.
