1990s, Lima, Peru. Aurora and Lucía are teenagers raised by their mother, Elena, who plans to emigrate with them in search of a new life. In order to leave the country, they need the signature of Carlos, their father, who has been absent for years. At a time when emigrating from Peru meant leaving forever, Carlos’s sudden reappearance awakens unexpected emotions and the need to reclaim his place in his daughters’ lives.
This story about family bonds, migration, and change premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, won the Grand Prize of the Generation Kplus section in Berlin, and this year became Switzerland’s official entry for the Academy Awards. Its Peruvian-Swiss director, Klaudia Reynicke, drew inspiration from her own experience, as, like the protagonists, she had to leave her country and the life she knew at a young age.
