Introduction: Nagy V. Gergő, screenwriter, dramaturg, film critic

According to Martin Scorsese already quoted with regard to Ramrod, André de Toth’s heroes in crime thrillers (just as in westerns) “are living in a false and evil world, where if you don’t learn to lie, if you don’t armour yourself with cynicism, you will be lost for sure”. In this darkest-of-dark movie, in which an important role goes to a fabulous speedboat, three men tussle over a real femme fatale, a woman who creates fatal complications, in other words, this is not merely a crime story, not just the tale of the fall of a decent man, not only the story of a murder, but a noir in which a woman, a social setting and passion equally drive men to corruption and the brink of disaster. There are few more thrilling female figures in films noir than the Lizabeth Scott we see (and hear, with her unforgettably sultry voice) in this André de Toth film.
