1860. Giuseppe Garibaldi began the adventure of the “Mille” from Quarto, surrounded by the enthusiasm of young idealists who had come from all the regions of Italy, and with his faithful group of officers, among whom one notices a new profile, that of the Palermo colonel Vincenzo Giordano Orsini. Among the many soldiers recruited are two Sicilians, Domenico Tricò, a peasant who had emigrated to the North, and Rosario Spitale, an illusionist. Having landed in Sicily, at Marsala, the “Mille” began to f ight with the Bourbon army, whose numerical evident their numerical preponderance. Under these conditions, it appears almost impossible to breach the enemy’s defences and penetrate Palermo. But when he is almost forced to retreat, Garibaldi devises an ingenious plan. Thus begins a chess game played on the edge of the of the imponderable, whose final outcome will be paradoxical and surprising.
