They Have Escaped

He ovat paenneet
drama, Finland/Netherlands, 102 min, 2014
in Finnish with English subtitles and Hungarian voice-over

Show times:

Director: Jukka-Pekka Valkeapää

Cast: Teppo Manner, Roosa Söderholm, Petteri Pennilä, Pelle Heikkilä

In a twist on boy-meets-girl, this gritty and dreamy drama is set at a juvenile detention center, where the boy, a stuttering introvert, has come to serve his mandatory civil service, and the girl, an attractive extrovert, is in custody. As they soon realize that they share a fire and a disregard for rules, laws and convention, the two misfits steal a car and go on the run − beginning a journey of drugs, sex and endless escapes. Dreams, memories, hallucinations and reality move side by side, collide and finally melt into one another in the narrative. An askew coming-of-age story and a fairytale-like reflection of today’s Finland at the same time, They Have Escaped is a poetically told and beautifully shot story of „dreamers whose future has been foretold”; a film about fragile love, childhood dreams and the violent reality.
