Coline Serreau’s talking heads documentary is a manifesto, or perhaps a cri de coeur. It is a turning point cast in cinematic mould finally giving space and a voice to the women featuring in it. Its particular merit is that it draws on the experiences of women from all levels of society: speakers include an urban factory worker, a rural farmer, housewife and porn actress. We hear about the problems faced by women young and old, those seeking their way in life, women who are filled with anxiety and women who feel liberated, those struggling amidst centuries-old social constraints as well as fighters taking on the challenges of modern life. The film shocked audiences back in 1977; sadly, nearly 50 years later, it still remains as relevant as ever.
