The adaptation of Emilian Stanev’s novel starts off with an unusual funeral scene: it is 1918 and death is a frequent visitor in the Bulgarian town of Tarnovo, where only the uniforms of soldiers who died on the front are buried. Beautiful Liza takes pity on the peach-thieving Serbian soldier and they grow ever closer to each other. This relationship is one of soft, delicate touch and the flowering of love counterpoints the austere, military surroundings. This movie of whispered words and commands is a lyrical, sensitive work by Vulo Radev.
