Latin American Film Days 2026

The Latin American Film Days are returning to Uránia for the fourth time. This time, we are
offering a taste of the region’s diverse film culture in collaboration  with mbassies of four countries – Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. The programme features 12 films from 7 countries, mostly new releases, which take us on a journey across Latin America. It leads from major cities – Rio, Mexico City and Buenos Aires – through the forests of the Andes and the Zapata Marshes in Cuba, all the way to the Atacama Desert. Film Week opens on  September 23rd with Red Bird (Puka Urpi), an Ecuadorian film with a unique atmosphere, which draws on the indigenous Otavalo culture. Most of the films will be screened just once – naturally, all in their original languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Quechua) with Hungarian subtitles. There will also be a pre-premiere screening: Mexican director Fernando Eimbcke’s film The Flies (Moscas), which made its debut in Berlin and will be shown in Budapest for the first time; in connection with this, we will screen the director’s first feature film, Duck Season (Temporada de patos) from celluloid. Among the giants of Brazilian cinema, Walter Salles and Kleber Mendoça Filho take centre stage: the former’s Central Station (Central do Brasil)  – a cult film from the turn of the millennium – and the latter’s Pictures of Ghosts (Retratos Fantasmas) – an ode to cinema and the art of filmmaking, not yet been screened in Hungary, just like The Movieteller (La contadora de películas) from Chile, which closes the Film Days. We’ll also be offering a taste of the award-winning Latin American films from the Vilmos Zsigmond International Film Festival in the form of two cinematographic gems.
