Norma Desmond intends to use Joe Gillis to facilitate her comeback to the stardom. The Hollywood practices of the former silent film star, her now-servant ex-director and the unemployed screenwriter trio navigate the story to dangerous waters. It starts and ends in the swimming pool in the former star's back yard. One of the interesting facts about Billy Wilder's murderously sarcastic film is that Erich von Stroheim plays a former film director in it, just like in The Lost Squadron (1932), where he plays a still active director, 18 years younger than in Sunset Boulevard.
