Yuwen, an unhappy young woman, lives in a small town cut off from the world. Her days are spent shopping, embroidering and tending her ailing husband. Their marriage is in the same state of ruin as their once magnificent family home. One day the man’s former classmate, Zichen, turns up and when he introduces the guest to his wife, it transpires that they know each other. This unexpected meeting stirs up the placid waters of life. Fei Mu’s sensitive melodrama, considered one of the finest films ever made in China, is about the conflict between suppressed emotions and duty.
