Károly Makk’s light, ironic comedy with fierce social criticism is about ‘a guilty city where everyone bets on the football pools’. The main characters: the young teacher who would like to establish the foundations for a marriage, the aged waiter who longs to free himself of his tyrant manager, the physician couple who have plans to upgrade their flooded flat, and the breadgirl who wants to escape from the service of her wealthy sister. Together they fill out a pools coupon with high hopes, but reality intervenes. And so does the narrator!

New Tenants (12)
Új lakók, Hungarian animation, colour, 1977, dir: Líviusz Gyulai, No Dialogue, 9’
In this first independent direction by graphic artist Líviusz Gyulai, the sublimity of classical culture is sharply contrasted with the levelling attitude of socialist society unable to tolerate any kind of difference. A centaur family moves into an apartment in Budapest, where the residents, led by the constantly disgruntled house janitor, don’t take kindly to the odd lifestyle of the new residents. Yet when they slope off, they leave behind a strange void.
