Had the pope fully wielded his international authority, could he have stopped or at least restrained the horrors of the Holocaust? Amen, an adaptation of Rolf Hochhuth’s play The Deputy, provocatively asserts that the Vatican was aware of the ongoing genocide but legitimized it through its silence on the matter. This year’s guest of honour at Marathon, Mathieu Kassovitz, plays Jesuit priest Ricardo Fontana, who although being one of the pope’s inner circle is still unable to make senior clergy understand the seriousness of the situation. The movie by Greek-French legendary director Costa-Gavras won a César for best screenplay in 2003.
