The film is an adaptation of a short novel by Géza Ottlik. Through the birth of the painting of the same name, and within a web of friendships and loves, it sketches out an era, but in comparison with the novel the history of the 1950s gets greater emphasis. In 1956, painter Benedek Both receives news of the death of his childhood friend Petár Halász who had lived in Paris. The Fine Arts Association would like to purchase one of his paintings of Halász, who politically speaking was totally flexible. However, ‘Bébé’ has no interest whatsoever in collaborating with the association, even when the dreaded state security police knock on his door.
